In this interview, António Vitorino, former member of the Joint European Parliament–Portuguese Parliament Committee on European Integration and Special Adviser in 2007 to the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC), outlines the relations between the European Parliament and the national parliaments and emphasises the enhanced role conferred on the national parliaments by the Treaty of Lisbon.
