A few days before the beginning of the diplomatic Val Duchesse Conference on the preparations for the Rome Treaties, Maurice Bourgès-Maunoury, French Defence Minister, makes Christian Pineau, his counterpart at the French Foreign Ministry, aware of his determination to safeguard France’s freedom to manufacture nuclear weapons independently of its accession to Euratom.

Dr Cristina Blanco Sío-López, Researcher in European Studies at the CVCE, was invited by Dieter Schlenker, the new Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence, to publicly present the ongoing research results of the Jean Monnet Action project ‘Initiative and constraint in the mapping of evolving European borders’.

As part of the CVCE’s lecture series, Michelle Egan, Associate Professor and holder of the ad personam Jean Monnet Chair in the School of International Service at American University, Washington, DC, gave a lecture entitled ‘Single Markets: Economic Integration in Europe and the United States’ at the Château de Sanem on 25 June 2013.

The CVCE is an active partner in the project ‘Initiative and constraint in the mapping of evolving European borders’, a Jean Monnet Action project from the European Commission.

The Jean Monnet Chair in History of European Integration and its Research Programme ‘Digital Humanities Luxembourg’ — DIHULUX (research unit Identités-Politiques-Sociétés-Espaces [IPSE]), together with the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE), are pleased to launch the call for papers for the DHLU Symposium 2012.

On 25 June 2013, the CVCE is organising a conference entitled ‘Single markets: Economic integration in Europe and the United States’, with Prof. Michelle Egan, holder of the ad personam Jean Monnet Chair at the School of International Service at American University in Washington, DC.

The CVCE, together with the Jean Monnet Chair in History of European Integration (University of Luxembourg, FLSHASE) and its research programme ‘Digital Humanities Luxembourg’ — DIHULUX (research unit Identités-Politiques-Sociétés-Espaces (IPSE)) — and the University of Luxembourg’s Master’s in Contemporary European History, are pleased to organise the DHLU Symposium 2013.

On 9 May 1950, staff of Robert Schuman and Jean Monnet put the finishing touches to the explanatory notes for the press on the Schuman Declaration, particularly regarding the anti-cartel aspect of the future coal and steel pool.

On 12 May 1950, Dean Acheson, US Secretary of State, sends a telegram to James E. Webb, Acting US Secretary of State, in which he describes the origins of the declaration of 9 May and particularly emphasises the role of Jean Monnet in the development of the Schuman Plan.
