On 20 December 1967, the European Commission calls on the Six to reach agreement on the continuation of the negotiations for the United Kingdom’s accession to the EEC following the disagreement that occurred the previous day in the Council.

On 1 July 1968, as the Common Customs Tariff comes into force and, a year and a half ahead of schedule, customs duties on industrial and some agricultural products are abolished, the European Commission publishes a statement in which it describes the implications of the Customs Union for the Six.

On 22 December 1980, in connection with the negotiations for Portugal’s accession to the European Communities, the Commission submits to the Council a confidential proposal concerning Portugal’s accession to the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or Euratom). This document focuses, in particular, on the transitional measures, the safeguard clause and customs tariffs.
