Le 5 juillet 1956, le Premier ministre d'Afrique du Sud, Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom, adresse au Premier ministre britannique, Anthony Eden, une lettre dans laquelle il critique la position du Royaume-Uni à l'égard de la Côte-de-l'Or. Johannes Strijdom exprime son scepticisme quant à l'indépendance du pays et par rapport à son entrée au Commonwealth.
