On 19 March 1951, at the Quai d’Orsay, Walter Hallstein, Head of the German delegation (second from the left, seated), Jean Monnet, Head of the French delegation (seated, on the right), and the Heads of the Italian, Belgian, Netherlands and Luxembourg delegations initial the Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).

On 21 December 1954, in London, the British Government, represented by the Minister, Duncan Sandys, and the President of the ECSC High Authority, Jean Monnet, sign an association agreement between the ECSC and the United Kingdom.

On 30 October 2012, a research seminar entitled ‘The Werner Plan and its consequences in the light of the Werner family archives’ was held at the University of Luxembourg in connection with the Master’s in Contemporary European History, as part of the programme of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration History.

On 22 and 23 October 1953, inaugurating the Chair in his name for European economic issues, the former French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, gives a lecture to students at the College of Europe in Bruges in which he emphasises the objectives and philosophy of the Schuman Plan and particularly highlights the role played by Jean Monnet in the development and implementation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).

On 24 June 1950, Maurice Thorez, General Secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), severely criticises the Schuman Plan and its economic implications.

In 1962, in the Bulletin de la Communauté économique européenne, Jean Monnet, former President of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), urges Member States to create a united, democratic and social Europe.
