On 27 December 1958, the Dutch daily newspaper De Volkskrant comments on the beginning of the first stage of the Customs Union. Customs duties between the six Member States of the European Economic Community (EEC) are reduced by 10 % while trade quotas are increased by 20 %.

Durch die Senkung der Zölle um 10 % und eine Anhebung der mengenmäßigen Beschränkungen um 20 % gehen die Sechs am 1. Januar 1959 zur ersten Etappe der Zollunion über.

Am 1. Januar 1959 läuten die Sechs die erste Etappe der Zollunion ein. Die Zollsätze zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten werden um 10 % gesenkt und die Handelskontingente um 20 % angehoben.

Am 12. Mai 1960 beschließen die Vertreter der Regierungen der Mitgliedstaaten der EWG im Ministerrat auf Initiative der Kommission, die Verwirklichung der Ziele des Vertrags zur Gründung der Europäischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft (EWG) zu beschleunigen.
