Dans une lettre du 1^er mai 1964 adressée au Premier ministre britannique Alec Douglas-Home, le Premier ministre malaise Tunku Abdul Rahman se félicite de l'adhésion à l'indépendance le 6 juillet 1964 du Malawi (anciennement Nyassaland) et se prononce pour une future adhésion du Malawi au Commonwealth et aux Nations Unies.
