On 22 January 1951, Jean Monnet sends a letter to Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, in which he raises the problem of the break up of the Ruhr iron and steel industries in connection with the European coal and steel pool.

On 30 June 1950, Konrad Adenauer sends a letter to Robert Schuman in which he thanks the French Foreign Minister and assures him of his support in the forthcoming negotiations on the implementation of a coal and steel pool in Western Europe.

On 13 December 1951, the French National Assembly ratifies the Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community. The following day, German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer sends a telegram to Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, to congratulate him.

On 20 June 1950, Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, welcomes the delegations of the Six to the Quai d’Orsay and formally opens the negotiations for the establishment of a coal and steel pool in Europe.

In this note to Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, Jean Monnet sets out the terms for the participation of the Saar, which is economically attached to France, in the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).

On 10 August 1950, Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, outlines to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe the implications and scope of the European coal and steel pool.

On 11 May 1950, two days after the Schuman Declaration, British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman and US Secretary of State Dean Acheson meet in London, where Ernest Bevin, unhappy at having been presented with a fait accompli, expresses his grievances to his French counterpart.

In April 1948, Jean Monnet is involved in negotiations in Washington concerning the distribution of material and financial aid to Europe under the Marshall Plan. In this letter written on 18 April 1948 and addressed to Robert Schuman, President of the French Council, he describes the mood of his US colleagues and ends by emphasising the need for a European federation.

On 30 October 1949, Dean Acheson, US Secretary of State, sends a letter to Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister, in which he refers to the settlement of the German question and proposes that France take the initiative to establish the main lines of a common policy for the Western Allies with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), so that the FRG can be integrated into Western Europe as soon as possible.
