On 1 February 1993, Alois Mock, Austrian Foreign Minister, welcomes the opening, in Brussels, of the negotiations for the accession of Austria, Finland and Sweden to the European Union.

In February 1993, during the negotiations for Austria’s accession to the European Union (EU), the Austrian Government answers some 200 environmental questions from several Austrian environmental organisations.

On 2 March 1994, in an address given in Vienna to the National Council, the Austrian Chancellor, Franz Vranitzky, welcomes the outcome of the negotiations for Austria’s accession to the European Union (EU).

In June 1992, the Austrian Government sends an aide-mémoire to the Twelve in which it reaffirms Austria’s commitment to Europe.

On 16 February 1990, the Austrian Mission to the European Communities draws up a memorandum in which it places particular emphasis on Austria’s commitment to the ideals of European integration.

In 1987, the Federation of Austrian Industrialists (VÖI) publishes a pamphlet in which it calls for Austria’s accession to the European Communities.

On 27 June 1994, the day after the signing, in Corfu, of the Treaty of Accession to the European Union by Austria, the Vienna daily newspaper Die Presse deplores the fact that the Twelve’s disagreement on the appointment of the new President of the European Commission spoiled the celebrations.

On 28 April 1995, as the Schengen Agreement is signed by Austria, the Vienna daily newspaper Die Presse welcomes the principle of the opening of the borders as laid down in the Agreement but is more pessimistic as regards its application.

‘The breakthrough.’ On 20 November 1990, commenting on the Paris Summit of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), the Austrian cartoonist Ironimus depicts the establishment of new partnerships between the Eastern and Western blocs by emphasising the role played by Austria in the process of political and economic rapprochement.

In 1996, in an article in the magazine Europäische Rundschau, Heinz Fischer, President of the Austrian National Council, analyses the political changes in the countries of Eastern Europe from Austria’s point of view and emphasises the need for the enlargement of the European Union to include these countries.
