‘Why expand NATO?' from Le Figaro (9 April 1997)
Text On 9 April 1997, in the French daily newspaper Le Figaro, Mikhail Gorbachev, former First Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, refutes the reasons adduced to justify the eastward expansion of NATO and analyses the impact of the accession of former Soviet Union satellite states to the Atlantic Alliance on Russia.
