Image The Basic Treaty, signed in East Berlin on 21 December 1972 by the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR), is of great significance in the history of relations between the two neighbouring countries and in the development of the Ostpolitik, their policy towards Eastern Europe.
