Let’s negotiate.’ In 1954, as debates are held on the rearmament of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) publishes a poster on the tragic consequences of the Second World War and the dangers of a remilitarisation of the country. The SPD, which is opposed to German rearmament as part of a future European Defence Community (EDC), calls for negotiations to be held on the issue.
