Interview with Manuel Marín González: Spain in the European Communities — challenges and opportunities (Madrid, 13 April 2010)

In this interview, Manuel Marín, European Commissioner from 1986 to 1999, outlines the major challenges surrounding Spain’s accession to the European Communities and the success of the first Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Communities in 1989. The aim of this first Presidency was to emphasise the Europeanist sentiment which made an active contribution to the integration process. Manuel Marín also gives his views on the sacrifices required of Spain for its industrial reconversion and the social cost of these reforms. He finally mentions the team which accompanied him in his new role as European Commissioner.
