In this interview excerpt, Joseph Weyland, Permanent Representative to the European Communities from 1984 to 1991, General Secretary in the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry from 1991 to 1992, Ambassador to London from 1993 to 2002, Ambassador to Brussels and Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) from 2003 to 2005 and Ambassador to Washington from 2005 to 2008, gives his thoughts on the changing priorities of the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry. He particularly regrets the fact that foreign trade no longer falls within the scope of this ministry.
