In this interview excerpt, Joseph Weyland, Deputy Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the European Communities from 1976 to 1979 and Permanent Representative to the European Communities from 1984 to 1991, describes the guidelines of Luxembourg diplomacy on European matters and the major issues that were dealt with between 1976 and 1979, particularly on the initiative of Jean Dondelinger, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the European Communities from 1975 to 1984, and Gaston Thorn, Foreign Minister from 1968 to 1980 and Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1974 to 1979. The main topics at that time included the European currency snake in 1972, the election of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage and cooperation with the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries.
