On 30 August 2014, the Heads of State or Government appoint Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini to the post of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission for a five-year term. On 1 November 2014 she takes over from Catherine Ashton, who was appointed to this post in 2009.
