Mai 1945 unterzeichnen Admiral Karl Dönitz, Nachfolger Adolf Hitlers an der Spitze des Reichs, und General Gustav Jodl, Generalstabschef der Wehrmacht, in Reims die bedingungslose Kapitulation der nationalsozialistischen Truppen. Am 8. Mai verkündet der britische Premierminister Winston Churchill die Neuigkeit im Radio.
