Column of Soviet armoured vehicles near Kabul (Afghanistan, 1 January 1980)
Image On 1 January 1980, a few weeks after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, a column of armoured vehicles from the Soviet army moves along a snowy road near the Afghan capital Kabul. The tanks and armoured vehicles of the Red Army soon prove unable to cope with the mountainous terrain in Afghanistan and the guerrilla tactics used by the Afghan resistance.
