The European Defence Community


The European Defence Community (EDC) was without doubt one of the most ambitious projects launched by the proponents of European unity in the 1950s. The attempt to form a European army, barely five years after the end of the Second World War, was a highly symbolic act indeed. However, defence of the homeland was considered a fundamental aspect of sovereignty that few countries were prepared to give up.
