Proclamation by the Republic of Hungary (23 October 1989)
Text On 23 October 1989, Matyas Szürös, President of the Hungarian Republic, announces the decision to abandon all references to the People’s Republic and instead to refer to the Republic of Hungary, i.e. to a democratic state governed by the rule of law.
