Interview with Bronislaw Geremek, Director of the Centre for Polish Civilisation at the University of Paris from 1960 to 1965, Professor at the University of Warsaw from 1965 to 1980, Member and Adviser of the Solidarność trade union movement from 1980 to 1989, Member of the Polish Parliament from 1989 to 2001, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Polish Parliament from 1989 to 1997, Polish Foreign Minister from 1997 to 2000, Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008, holder of the Chair of European Civilisation at the College of Europe in Natolin from 2002 to 2008 and President of the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe from 2006 to 2008, carried out by the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) on 11 June 2008 in the studios of the Council of the European Union in Brussels. The interview was conducted by Serge Thines, a Scientific Collaborator at the CVCE, and particularly focuses on the following subjects: the creation and work of Solidarność and the peaceful transition in Poland, Poland’s accession to the European Union, and the limits and identity of the European Union.
