Humberto Delgado
Bild An opponent of the regime of António Salazar, General Humberto Delgado was the only candidate to stand against the official candidate at the presidential elections held in 1958. He went into exile in January 1959 and was assassinated in February 1965 in Villanueva del Fresno, Spain, near the Portuguese border.
