On 18 March 1971, in a letter sent to Georges Pompidou, the German Chancellor, Willy Brandt, urges the French President to find a common solution to the problem of the British contribution to the financing of the EU as quickly as possible so as to enable negotiations to be concluded for the United Kingdom’s accession to the European Communities.
