Image On 18 November 1997, shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Amsterdam, the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Western European Union (WEU), meeting in Erfurt as the WEU Council, emphasise the importance of establishing closer institutional links between the European Union (EU) and WEU, which in turn would require the strengthening of practical cooperation between the two organisations.
