Le 21 mai 1947, Winston Churchill, leader du Parti Conservateur britannique, adresse une lettre manuscrite au Premier ministre britannique Clement Attlee dans laquelle il manifeste le soutien de son parti à l'indépendance de l'Inde et confirme sa volonté d'attribuer le statut de dominion aux nouveaux États issus de la partition de l'Inde.
