Note from the French Foreign Ministry on European economic integration (20 April 1955)
Texte On 20 April 1955, a note from the General Directorate of Economic and Financial Affairs in the French Foreign Ministry outlines the possible economic and political consequences of the European integration process for France. Referring to a study by the Economic Commission for Europe, the note analyses the potential effects with regard to deindustrialisation and falling living standards for French workers, and also the possible risks for agriculture. In political terms, the concern is that European integration will lead to a return of German political and economic hegemony.
