Le 7 octobre 1966, trois jours après l'indépendance du Lesotho, le Premier ministre lesothan Joseph Leabua Jonathan adresse une lettre au Premier ministre du Royaume-Uni Harold Wilson dans laquelle il demande au gouvernement britannique de soutenir le Lesotho financièrement.
