In this interview excerpt, Michel Camdessus, Deputy Director of the Treasury in the French Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs from 1974 to 1982 and Director from 1982 to 1984, and Chairman of the Monetary Committee of the European Economic Community (EEC) from 1982 to 1984, describes the process that led François Mitterrand, French President from 1981 to 1995, on the advice of Jacques Delors, Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance from 1981 to 1984, to keep France in the European Monetary System in 1983, at the cost of what is known as the ‘austerity turn’, which meant abandoning devaluations of the franc, disinflation and the strengthening of Community monetary policies.
