French foreign policy


General de Gaulle’s plan was to put France firmly back on the map by equipping it with the resources required for a policy of independence and grandeur. This was his paramount interest as he sought to give a new impetus to European integration. While he supported a Europe of which France and Germany were the main pillars, he rejected any significant transfer of sovereignty to a supranational authority.
