Despite its current difficulties, the European project has remained the guarantor of the continent’s peaceful unification for more than 60 years. For the Nobel Committee, this made the EU a worthy recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize ‘for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe’.
