Independence of the Mali Federation (20 June 1960)

On 20 June 1960, Modibo Keïta, President of the Federal Assembly of the Mali Federation (on the left), and Mamadou Dia, Vice-President of the Mali Federation (on the right), meet French Prime Minister Michel Debré (centre) at the Hôtel Matignon in Paris to celebrate the independence of the Mali Federation. Two months after this meeting, Senegal withdrew from the federation and proclaimed its independence. Mamadou Dia became Prime Minister. On 22 September 1960, led by Modibo Keïta, the Sudanese Republic proclaimed its independence in turn, but kept the name Mali.
