European Council Decision on the election of its President (1 December 2009)

On 1 December 2009, the European Council appoints Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy as the first permanent President of the European Council for the period from 1 December 2009 to 31 May 2012. The term of President of the European Council lasts for two and a half years and can be renewed once.
