On 7 September 1962, German cartoonist Wilhelm Hartung illustrates the vital role played by French President Charles de Gaulle and Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer in the European integration process. The two men are depicted as acrobats mutually supporting the rest and forming the pillars of a united ‘Europe’.
