‘Together — not afraid of the big animals …’ On 24 January 1973, Fritz Behrendt, a Dutch cartoonist originally from Berlin, takes an ironic look at the role and influence of the Franco-German duo as a player in international relations alongside the major world powers (the United States is depicted as an eagle — President Richard Nixon; China as a dragon — Chairman Mao; and the Soviet Union as a bear — President of the Supreme Soviet Leonid Brezhnev).
