In preparation for the drafting of a note by the Council of Western European Union (WEU) on WEU–NATO relations, the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Geoffroy Chodron de Courcel, requests instructions from French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville. Since the other members of the WEU Council are speculating on the potential consequences that France’s withdrawal from the integrated command structure of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) might have for WEU, Geoffroy Chodron de Courcel asks for further clarification of France’s position on force level controls, the controls carried out by the Agency for the Control of Armaments (ACA) and the joint Agency/SHAPE inspections.
