Interview with Jean François-Poncet, Policy Officer then Deputy Head in the Private Office of the French Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs and Secretary-General of the French Delegation to the Intergovernmental Conference on the Common Market and Euratom from 1956 to 1958, Deputy Director for European Organisations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1958 to 1960, Secretary-General of the Presidency of the French Republic from 1976 to 1978, Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1978 to 1981, and Senator for the Lot-et-Garonne département and a Member of the Senate Committee for European Affairs from 1983 to 2011, carried out by the Centre Virtuel de la Connaissance sur l’Europe (CVCE) on 16 March 2007 and 3 July 2008 at the French Senate in Paris. The interview was conducted by Étienne Deschamps, a Researcher at the CVCE, and particularly focuses on the following subjects: the European revival and the Rome Treaties, the first elections to the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage, France’s European policy under President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, France’s policy towards the Eastern bloc, and the reform of the European institutions from the European Convention to the Treaty of Lisbon.
