On 11 March 1948, in anticipation of the forthcoming signing of the Treaty of Economic, Social and Cultural Collaboration and Collective Self-Defence between France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit sets out the reasons for the establishment of a Western Union and emphasises the importance of such an initiative.
